My Scam Story
I am a survivor. It was not my fault, but it took me a while to believe it.
My story started with online dating a successful businessman, or so I thought. He groomed me, romanced me into believing he loved me. Common story, but when it happens to you, you finally believe that it can happen to you, that you’re not smarter than the criminal. But that too took me over one year post-scam to come to terms with.
‘Joseph’ seemed to have an accurate and authentic FB & Instagram profile; and a lucrative business website that validated his story.
It was only when I ran across a victim story warning that his picture and profile were stolen from a wealthy real estate billionaire in Dubai. I now knew the name of the stolen identity and found most of the photos and videos he had sent me as his own.
Shortly before this realization, we weren’t able to meet after his interior design ‘project’ went awry and he was supposedly ‘thrown in jail’ for a visa overstay I became suspicious. I was in shock – I had refinanced my house and taken a mortgage out on my rental property to send him incrementally over $300k within 6 months.
That was actually toward the end as that was three days before I was actually planning to join him in Dubai after seven months of courtship. I was ecstatic to finally be coming to meet my love. I called the US embassy and they said the passport he had given me was not valid. I cancelled my flight and sent him voice and text messages stating I was not coming.
While he was ‘detained’, had already declined sending him the $50k additional money to help bail him out of jail. I had received a bogus letter from an alleged attorney I could never verify.
It didn’t end there. He went quiet for a few months, contacting me again out of the blue. Of course he is was again asking me for $5k to get his citizens card after ‘being released from jail’.
Then he finally realized I was not going to give him more money. I never called him out directly but confronted him about inconsistencies in his stories all along. Of course he always had a reason or an explanation.
This is where my story ends. Finally moved on. Reported it to all authorities.
I’m grateful it didn’t completely devastate me. I’ve forgiven myself, now understand it was not my fault – that Joseph was an expert. I learned and it will never happen again.
I hope I can make a difference as this scam industry is out of hand in the world. These criminals may not be caught but they will reap what they sow, eventually. I believe in a reciprocal universe.
I am a loving kind human and will heal and move on from this trauma, a different person with a new found love for myself.

Statement About Victim Blaming
Some of our articles discuss various aspects of victims. This is both about better understanding victims (the science of victimology) and their behaviors and psychology. This helps us to educate victims/survivors about why these crimes happened and not to blame themselves, better develop recovery programs, and to help victims avoid scams in the future. At times, this may sound like blaming the victim, but it does not blame scam victims; we are simply explaining the hows and whys of the experience victims have.
These articles, about the Psychology of Scams or Victim Psychology – meaning that all humans have psychological or cognitive characteristics in common that can either be exploited or work against us – help us all to understand the unique challenges victims face before, during, and after scams, fraud, or cybercrimes. These sometimes talk about some of the vulnerabilities the scammers exploit. Victims rarely have control of them or are even aware of them, until something like a scam happens, and then they can learn how their mind works and how to overcome these mechanisms.
